THE UGANDA DIASPORA CONFERENCE IN CHINA.
The Uganda Embassy in Beijing and the Uganda Consulate in Guangzhou co-organised the first Diaspora conference of Ugandans living in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from 8th to 10th December 2017 at the Uganda Embassy in Beijing.
The Conference held under the theme “Mobilizing the Diaspora for National Development” was attended by representatives of the business, professional and student communities from different Provinces, with the objectives of deepening understanding of the opportunities in PRC, roles of Missions in facilitating the Diaspora and identifying synergies between the two in contributing to National Development.
The Conference was officially opened by H.E Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, Ambassador of Uganda to PRC who advised participants to take advantage of the immense opportunities in China to contribute to the development of Uganda. He urged them to refrain from illegal activities but rather maximise the cordial relations existing between Uganda and PRC to benchmark good practices, acquire skills and technology to convert Uganda’s huge resources into economic wealth.
The conference deliberated and agreed to continue working together on a number of things including promoting the importation of Ugandan products especially coffee, Sesame and fruits into China, promotion of Uganda’s tourism, establishing start-up cottage industries in Uganda for import substitution and ensuring the few criminal elements do not spoil the opportunities for Uganda that exist in PRC.
The conference concluded with participants agreeing to continue holding such regular forums for the Diaspora to exchange ideas and develop strategies that promote national interests.
